Welcome to the Macroscope

The place to talk ecology and what we can do for better nature and a sustainable, stable and fun society.

About this blog

"Ecologists [..] lack a Macroscope - a machine that reveals big patterns that emerge from a mass of local fuzz, and which operates on time-scales orders of magnitude longer than a three-year research grant."

- John H. Lawton

Good ecologists know which factors can influence an ecological process, but great ecologists weed down the list and tell you which are the key drivers. The Macroscope, often envisioned as a machine, is not a machine, it is a brain, or better yet - multiple brains working together, engaging in imaginative critical thinking, while wielding Ockham's razor.

This blog aims to be a Macroscope.

It tries to be a Macroscope so as to better understand the natural and human world, so as to be able to address the current socio-environmental crises. Read more about the blog's mission here
